Get an API key

Your API key is your password for the SDK. Every request carries it, and it decides whose jobs are whose.

1. Create the key

  1. Open humanoidiq-dev.centific.com and sign in.
  2. Open the API tab.
  3. Enter the 6-digit code we email you, to confirm it's you.
  4. Click Create key, give it a name (for example, my-laptop), and choose how long it should last.
  5. Copy the key now. It starts with sk-cen- and is shown only once. If you lose it, create a new one.

Treat the key like a password

Don't paste it into chat, tickets, screenshots, or code you share. If it leaks, revoke it on the API tab and create a new one.

2. Load the key into your terminal

Every script in this guide reads the key from an environment variable called CENTIFIC_API_KEY, so the key never sits inside a file. Set it once per terminal window. It lasts until you close that window.

This hides the key while you paste it:

$secureKey = Read-Host 'Paste your API key' -AsSecureString
$env:CENTIFIC_API_KEY = (New-Object System.Net.NetworkCredential('', $secureKey)).Password
$env:CENTIFIC_API_KEY.Substring(0,7)
Line What it does
1 Asks for the key and hides what you paste (shows *****)
2 Stores it in CENTIFIC_API_KEY for this terminal window only
3 Prints the first 7 characters so you can check it loaded, without showing the whole key

Expected output:

Paste your API key: ****************************************************************
sk-cen-
read -rs -p "Paste your API key: " CENTIFIC_API_KEY && export CENTIFIC_API_KEY && echo
echo "${CENTIFIC_API_KEY:0:7}"

Expected output:

Paste your API key:
sk-cen-

If the last line prints sk-cen-, the key is loaded. If it prints anything else or an error, run the commands again.

New terminal window = set the key again

If a script fails with KeyError: 'CENTIFIC_API_KEY', the terminal you're using doesn't have the key yet.
